VICTORIA, BC – The countdown is officially on, with just a month remaining until the seventh and final Canadian Premier League (CPL) #GotGame Open Trials stop takes place in Victoria, November 5-6, 2018.
The Trials are a chance for aspiring players to showcase their skills in front of the league’s managers and potentially set themselves up to crack a roster when the inaugural CPL season kicks-off early next year.
Pacific FC assistant coach James Merriman has represented the club through three stops of the coast-to-coast Trials, working alongside the league’s other coaches to identify standouts and narrow down the talent at each stop, which began in Halifax in late September.
“We really didn’t know what to expect before we went into Halifax,” explained Merriman. “However, the attitude and approach of the players was really good and it’s been excellent throughout.”
Merriman and his league counterparts have seen a showing of over 200 players through each of the first three trials in Halifax, Montreal and Hamilton. Each remaining city, save for a select number of spaces on Vancouver Island, have filled their registration spots. After wrapping up in Hamilton on Oct. 2, the trials will resume, Oct. 11-12 in Toronto as the Canada-wide search for soccer talent hits the halfway mark.
“We have an excellent group of coaches here,” added Merriman. “Everyone has got on with each other really well and have come together to make it a really enjoyable process. The league has been doing a great job of organizing each event and having Alex Bunbury take the lead at each stop has been excellent.”
It’s a unique opportunity for Merriman and the rest of the CPL, who are not only scouting players for the upcoming season, but helping to establish a foundation for an entire professional league.
“It’s exciting and it’s motivating to take on that responsibility [of shaping Pacific FC and the league as a whole],” Merriman concluded. “Continuing to grow and continuing to build each day with our team and with our club. We’ve been given a blank canvas, so what is our identity? What is our brand? Building that—especially on Vancouver Island—and working towards that everyday…I mean, it doesn’t really get any better than that.”
