Four Tridents in Team of the Week – Week 5

The Canadian Premier League announced the Team of the Week for Week 5 of the CPL season on Monday, with Amer Didic, Thomas Meilleur-Giguére, Adonijah Reid, and Sean Young all earning spots after Pacific FC’s 4-1 victory over York United FC on Sunday.

Didic, the first half of Pacific’s centre-back pairing in this week’s Team of the Week, impacted this game immediately thanks to a crashing headed goal to open the scoring. His first goal of the season was an excellent example of the brute force Didic provides when attacking corners. The centre-back also completed the most passes of anyone in purple and had three clearances as the best defence in the league continued to roll.

Didic’s partner in the middle, Meilleur-Giguére, was just as important to the Tridents’ victory on Sunday. The 25-year-old had four clearances, won possession five times, and had the highest pass accuracy of all players who played 90 minutes. There isn’t a centre-back duo more in tune with each other than Didic and Meilluer-Giguére right now, as both could’ve been named in the Team of the Week a few times already.

Reid, the Gatorade Man of Match, was the man to deliver the ball that Didic headed home to open the scoring. After picking up that assist, Reid also played a role in the second goal as part of the excellent team move that ultimately set Young free to slide in Manny Aparicio. Reid’s hold-up play from the centre-forward position provided a crucial outlet for Pacific on Sunday as the team looked to soak up pressure and counter against the Nine Stripes.

Young was sensational again on the weekend. The 22-year-old had four chances created, two assists, the most passes into the final third, seven touches in the opposition box, and eight final third entries. Young’s growth as an attacking threat has been fantastic to see this season, but its the box-to-box aspects of his play in midfield that make him stand out in this league.

This is the second time Didic and Young have been named to the Team of the Week, and the first appearance for Meilleur-Giguére and Reid.
