The Canadian Premier League announced the Team of the Week for Week 16 of the CPL season on Tuesday, with Manny Aparicio, Amer Didic, Josh Heard, and Sean Young earning spots after Pacific FC’s 2-1 win over HFX Wanderers FC on Monday.
The man to play the all-important cross for Pacific’s second goal on Monday was the midfield dynamo Aparicio. In typical fashion, Aparicio covered all areas of the pitch and was excellent both in and out of possession. The 27-year-old was all action against the Wanderers, highlighted by his team-high passes into the final third (18) and team-high duels won (11). Aparicio also won possession five times and successfully completed 4/6 dribbles.
Didic was an imposing force as usual, causing problems at the back and in attack. The centre-back has been a constant threat at set pieces this season – with four goals already to his name – and almost had a couple more on Monday with two shots on target and one chance created. Defensively, Didic had four clearances and one interception.
Pacific’s captain Heard has been growing into the season as he juggles his new leadership role with playing his usual high-intensity brand of football. On Monday, Heard grabbed his fourth goal of the campaign (and his second in two games) when he slotted home Aparicio’s inch-perfect cross in the second half. The finish showed the confidence Heard is playing with at the moment as both he and the rest of the team return to top form. Aside from his goal, the 28-year-old had five touches in the opposition box, created two chances, and won possession eight times (tied for a game-high).
The other Island lad Young was an early mainstay in the Team of the Week this season and finds himself back in after another standout performance in his advanced midfield role. Young ranked highly in many statistical categories on both sides of the ball against Halifax. The 22-year-old had a team-high pass accuracy (94%) and pass accuracy in the final third (93%), played the second-most passes into the final third (14), and won possession in the final third twice (tie for game-high). Young also had four touches inside the opposition box and created two chances.
This is the sixth appearance for Young, the fifth for Didic, fourth for Aparicio, and the second for Heard in the CPL’s Team of the Week this season.
