Baskett and Young named to CPL Team of the Week – Week 6

The Canadian Premier League announced the Team of the Week for Week 6 of the CPL season on Tuesday, with Kieran Baskett and Sean Young earning spots after Pacific FC’s 1-1 draw with Valour FC on Saturday.

Baskett was brought into the Starting XI for the first time in CPL action this season and made the most of his opportunity. The 21-year-old featured in both of Pacific’s Canadian Championship matches so far, but hadn’t seen the pitch in league play yet. Baskett was quick off his line, communicated well with a defensive unit that had never played together, and played the ball out from the back with confident. That’s without even mentioning his excellent save from Valour’s attempted bicycle kick in the 12th minute.

Pacific’s captain on the day, Young, was once again a cut above and picked up his second goal of the season, already the most he’s scored in one campaign. The 22-year-old was relentless in midfield all match, pushing high in attacking and dropping back without possession, and generally just running the show for the Tridents. Young’s ability on both sides of the ball is exhibited in the fact he led all players in the match in two statistical category’s: possession won (10) and chances created (three). His most important contribution of the match came in the 49th minute with the score still deadlocked. As the ball rebounded back off of Ayman Sellouf’s shot, Young connected sweetly on his supposed weak foot to smash the ball in the back of the net and give Pacific a 1-0 lead. In his fourth season as a professional, Young is quickly growing into the best all-around player in the entire Canadian Premier League, and seeing him wear the captain’s armband on Saturday was another exciting accolade for the Island-born kid.

This is the first time Baskett has been named in the Team of the Week in 2o23, and the third appearance for Young.
