The Canadian Premier League announced the Team of the Week for Week 16 of the CPL season on Tuesday and four Pacific FC players earned their way into the XI: Callum Irving, Amer Didic, Sean Young and Marco Bustos.
Starting at the back, goalkeeper – and captain on the day – Callum Irving helped marshal the back-line and kept his fifth clean sheet of the season in the 3-0 victory over Cavalry FC. Irving made six saves overall including a few massive stops down the stretch to maintain the shutout, with his late save off a close-range Cavalry free-kick the highlight of the bunch. Irving’s leadership and non-stop talk was one of the main factors Pacific kept a clean sheet against a dangerous Cavalry side. This is Irving’s second time being name in the Team of the Week.
Just in front of Irving, Didic also played a huge role in holding off the Cavs’ attack for the whole match. Didic finished with nine clearances, three recoveries, and 3/4 aerial duels won. The six-foot-four centre-back’s physical presence was crucial as Pacific matched the aggression the visitors are known to play with. This was Didic’s fourth appearance in Team of the Week this season, the most of any Pacific FC player.
Young was named to the CPL Team of the Week for the first time in his career. The 21-year-old midfield looked like the most energetic player in the middle of the park for most of the match, often receiving the ball on the turn and setting off a free-flowing counter-attack. His work in transition was matched by his defensive duties as he created two chances going forward while also winning 100% of his tackles and finishing with nine recoveries.
Bustos put in a blistering performance against Cavalry FC on Friday, scoring the opening goal and forcing a Cavs’ own goal for the second in a 3-0 for the Tridents. Bustos’ goal against Cavalry was his first of the season – and he opened his account in style. Bustos’ looping first-time shot caught the whole Cavalry defence out after a scuffed clearance from the goalkeeper. Then, just after halftime, Bustos swung in a lovely cross that essentially left Jose Escalante no choice but to stick the ball in the back of his own net and double Pacific’s lead. This is Bustos’ second appearance in Team of the Week; he was also named CPL Player of the Week on Tuesday.
